Senya Beraku is located in the Central Region of Ghana approximately 50 kilometers from the capital, Accra. The tragedy is that about 65% of the children in Senya Beraku do not have access to quality education. 2 in every 5 school going children do not have the means to go to school because parents and guardians cannot afford the expenses of school.
In Senya Beraku, many people live below the poverty threshold are barely surviving on a dollar a day. There is little or minimal money for food, let alone to pay school fees and medical bills. Research conducted by Miracle Works have showed that, children especially girls are denied an education as they are forced into child labor or trafficked into another community to work, confined in the kitchen or take care of younger siblings. The residents in the community which also include Liberian refugees who have come to seek asylum in Ghana are forced to contend with highly compromised living conditions including poor sanitation, high rate of unemployment and poor housing among other challenges. This has a huge negative impact on children.
The Solution lies in tackling the core problems, poverty, accessibility and motivation.
